0.5 ml vs 1 ml vs 2 ml: what each amount looks like

The same face at each amount. Most first treatments are 0.5–1 ml; 2 ml is usually built up over two sessions.

Hydration and a slightly crisper border. A good first step if you want nobody to notice.

Fuller

More projection and a defined cupid's bow. Usually staged over two visits so the lips can adapt.

Results timeline

Swelling makes lips look biggest in the first days. Judge your result at two weeks.

  1. Day 0

    Right after

Lips look fuller than the final result. Tenderness and pinpoint bruising are normal.

  2. Days 1–3

    Peak swelling

Swelling peaks, sometimes unevenly. Avoid heat, alcohol and hard exercise.

  3. Week 2

    Settled result

Swelling has gone. This is the time to review your result or plan a top-up.

  4. Months 6–12

    Gradual fade

The filler breaks down slowly. Many people top up every 6–12 months.

What to know before you book

Lip filler for thin lips

Thin lips can change a lot, but not all at once. One syringe usually adds visible volume without changing your lip shape; going further is safer in stages, a few weeks apart, so the tissue can stretch gradually and the result stays natural. If your upper lip mostly disappears when you smile, a lip flip or a combination may suit you better than filler alone.

Choose by goal: definition, volume or symmetry

Definition places small amounts along the lip border for a crisper outline. Volume adds fullness to the body of the lip. Symmetry corrects one side that is fuller than the other. Lip lines around the mouth are often treated with a softer filler or skin booster. Tell your injector which of these you want; the technique and amount differ.

Who lip filler suits (and when a lip flip is better)

Filler suits people who want more volume, shape or symmetry. A lip flip uses a few units of anti-wrinkle injection to roll the upper lip slightly outward; it shows more lip when you smile but adds no volume and lasts 2–3 months. Filler is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with active cold sores or infection near the mouth, or with some autoimmune conditions.

What bad lip filler looks like

Signs of a poor result: a duck-like upper lip that sticks out past the lower, a ridge or "shelf" above the border, filler that has moved above the lip line, lumps you can see or feel, a bluish tint under the skin, or lips out of proportion with the face. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. Seek urgent care for severe pain, skin that turns white or mottled, or vision changes: these can signal a blocked blood vessel.

Risks and side effects

Common: swelling, bruising, tenderness and small bumps for a few days. Uncommon: lumps that need massage or dissolving, cold-sore flare-ups, asymmetry. Rare but serious: blocked blood vessels (vascular occlusion), infection, delayed inflammatory reactions. Choose a licensed medical injector who uses approved products and can dissolve filler if needed.

Lip filler for men

Men usually want restored volume and definition rather than a pout. Lower amounts (often 0.5 ml) placed in the body of the lip keep the result masculine and subtle.

FAQ

Lip filler questions

Do lip fillers look bad at first?
They can look swollen, uneven or a little lumpy for the first 2–3 days. That is normal. Judge your result after two weeks, once swelling has settled.
Is 1 ml of lip filler enough?
For most first treatments, yes. 1 ml gives a visible but natural change. Very thin lips may need a second session to reach the look you want.
How long does lip filler last?
Usually 6–12 months, depending on the product, the amount and your metabolism. Results fade gradually rather than all at once.
How painful is getting lip fillers?
Most fillers contain a local anaesthetic, and many clinics use numbing cream first. Most people describe it as stinging pressure rather than strong pain.
Is there a downside to lip fillers?
Swelling and bruising are common for a few days. Less often there are lumps or asymmetry, and rarely a blocked blood vessel, which needs urgent treatment. Choose a licensed medical injector.
How do I see how I would look with lip fillers?
Upload a front photo to our AI preview and switch between 0.5, 1 and 2 ml. It shows a realistic simulation to discuss with your injector, not a guaranteed result.
Can lip filler be dissolved?
Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, usually within a day or two.
